Historic Detroit

Every building in Detroit has a story — we're here to share it

Dossin Great Lakes Museum

The Dossin Great Lakes Museum, located on Detroit’s Belle Isle, opened in 1960 and highlights the city’s rich maritime history. It replaced the earlier Museum of Great Lakes History, which operated aboard the schooner J.T. Wing.

Funded by the Dossin family, the museum features exhibits like the Gothic Room from the City of Detroit III, the pilot house of the William Clay Ford, and the anchor from the Edmund Fitzgerald. It remains a key destination for exploring Detroit’s connection to Great Lakes shipping and travel.
