Historic Detroit

Detroit Boat Club

Today, it’s a crumbling landmark on Belle Isle, but the Detroit Boat Club is steeped in history.

Founded in 1839, the DBC is the oldest yachting/boating organization in the country and one of the 25 oldest in the world.

This building opened Aug. 5, 1902, when an inaugural dance was held. “Dancing was continued until nearly midnight, as there were several hundred who were anxious to step the light fantastic in the pretty ballroom,” the Detroit Free Press wrote the following morning.

This is the club’s third building; its previous homes burned down. No doubt, this is why this clubhouse was built as one of the first entirely concrete structures in the country.

Today, it’s used by only crew teams and needs millions in work.

More on this building of Detroit coming soon.
